Whitehaven

Hilton Terrace

Hilton Terrace connects Wellington Row with Solway View. The name is said to come from the surname of the builder which would be probably George and John Hilton who are listed as masons in the 1811 directory living on New Street and Church Street and this terrace dates from about 1814. It follows the route of the old waggon-way from Harris Moor down to the harbour. It is a very steep hill therefore with large waggons full of coal running down on rails the brakes had to be very good.
