De Ponkjewail Dutch street organ

At the entrance to the 2009 West Cumbria Vintage rally was this marvellous organ known as De- Pronkjewail. It was originally built as a barrel organ in 1850 but after several enlargements and restorations it is now as 60 key street organ with 215 wooden pipes. It has played all over Europe and was bought by the present owner in 1988 from the great Dorset Steam Fair and is still used by the Royal Netherlands Embassy for promotional work, whenever a Dutch Street organ is need in this country.

Loopy the Clown

Another Dutch visitor was Gerard Boelins a.k.a. Loopy the Clown who had also brought a vintage car and won the prize for the furthest travelled to visit the show. Access to the show was made much easier this year as the new by-pass allowed other traffic to continue without hold-ups whilst keeping the entrance open for people visiting the show.

Pony Club event - flag collection

Always keen to make the rally a good day out for all the family, this year saw the introduction of a pony club event on the main field. Teams from Workington and Whitehaven competed in a series of entertaining events designed to show the youngsters skill at working as a team with their ponies.

Shaving mug collection

The craft and collections tent featured this collection of over a hundred different shaving mugs along with many other pieces of shaving equipment. For such a masculine object it was surprising how delicate and floral many of them were.

Haig pit engine model

Amongst the models on show was this working scale copy of the winding engines at Haig Pit complete with Mechano pit head gear.

Milnthorpe Steel band at the vintage rally

Music was also provided by Milnthorpe Steel band who did some great renditions of popular tunes and were a very attractive addition to this year's show.

Red 1 miniature car

A mention must go to this young lad who stood holding a big bunch of red roses, next to his shiny red car, all day long dressed in a full suit and cap, in the blazing sun.
